Kimberly Skiba Honored as First Recipient of RBA Young Lawyer Award

of its senior associates were all voted by their peers for the 2011 edition
of Virginia Super Lawyers(r). W. Joseph Owen III and Mary Burkey Owens were
named to Virginia Super Lawyers. Samuel J. Kaufman and Kimberly A. Skiba
were recognized as Virginia Super Lawyers "Rising Stars."
Super Lawyers, a Thomson Reuters business, is a rating service of
outstanding lawyers from more than 70 practice areas who have attained a
high degree of peer recognition and professional achievement. Only 5% of
licensed attorneys in Virginia are selected for inclusion by Super Lawyers
after an extensive nomination, peer review and editorial research process.
For the third year in a row, Mary Burkey Owens received the added
distinction as one of the "Top 25 Female Super Lawyers" in Virginia
indicating she received one of the highest point totals in the nomination,
research and blue ribbon review process. She was selected by Virginia Super
Lawyers in the Family Law category. Owens has handled complex custody,
divorce, support and equitable distribution cases for over 25 years and is
trained in the collaborative law process. She is a founding member and
former president of the Metro Richmond Family Law Bar and past president of
the Chesterfield County Bar Association. In 2011 Owens was honored by
Virginia Lawyers Weekly as one of the "Influential Women of Virginia" who
are making notable contributions to their profession and community.
Joe Owen was selected for Virginia Super Lawyers in the General Litigation
category. Owen is a successful trial lawyer representing individuals and
businesses in civil and commercial litigation, criminal defense, personal
injury, real estate, estate planning, corporate and construction law. He is
chairman of the Drug Court Foundation of Chesterfield/Colonial Heights and a
statewide leader with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Owen is a
founding member of North Star Community, which provides a Christ-centered
approach to substance abuse recovery.
Sam Kaufman was named to Virginia Super Lawyers "Rising Stars" for the third
consecutive year and is listed in the General Litigation category. He
represents both businesses and individuals in general litigation, commercial
litigation and real estate matters. Kaufman is 2011-2012 president of the
University of Richmond Alumni Association and a former national co-chair of
the University of Richmond's Annual Fund. He is also past chairman of the
Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce.
Kimberly Skiba was named to Virginia Super Lawyers "Rising Stars" and is
listed in the Family Law category. Her practice focuses on domestic
relations and wills and estate planning. She is programs co-chair of the
Metro Richmond Women's Bar Association, a member of the membership committee
of the Richmond Bar Association, past co-chair of the Richmond Bench-Bar
Conference, and a board member of Safe Harbor.

recognized as a member of the 2011 Class of Influential Women of Virginia.
Virginia Lawyers Media, publishers of Virginia Lawyers Weekly and the
Virginia Medical Law Report, announced the selections. This awards program,
now in its third year, recognizes the outstanding efforts of women in the
Commonwealth in all fields, including law, business, health care, education
and the arts. The honors are given to individuals who are making notable
contributions to their chosen professions, their communities and society at
large.
The Class of 2011 honorees will be celebrated at a gala luncheon on May 19,
2011 at the Richmond Marriott. The "Influential Woman of the Year" for 2011,
to be voted on by the 2011 honorees themselves, will be announced at this
luncheon. Each honoree also will be profiled in a special publication that
will be distributed at the event and inserted into Virginia Lawyers Weekly
in early May.

Amy Hensley Joins Owen & Owens

The law firm of Owen & Owens, PLC is pleased to announce that Amy E. Hensley has joined the firm. She will practice in the areas of criminal defense, domestic relations, civil litigation and real estate.
Hensley is a recent graduate of William & Mary School of Law where she served as a member of the Honor Council and was a member of the William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review. Before law school, she worked on Capitol Hill as a Legislative Correspondent for Senator Jim Webb and as a Research Assistant at The Henry L. Stimson Center in Washington, D.C.
Amy graduated magna cum laude from Emory & Henry College where she was vice president of the student government and a member of the varsity basketball team for four years. She was decorated with many awards, including the Moot Court Best Brief and Orator Awards. While in college, she also interned with the Atlanta Legal Aid Society and U.S. Magistrate Judge Pamela M. Sargent. Amy is proficient in Spanish, and she plans to employ her language skills to better serve Spanish-speaking clients in the Richmond area.
Jace Padden appointed to Board of Chesterfield CASA

Jace Padden has been named to the Board of Directors for the Chesterfield Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program. CASA volunteers are appointed by judges to speak up for abused, neglected, and abandoned children. They work one-on-one with children to assist the courts in making sure each child has a safe, nurturing, and permanent home. Chesterfield CASA volunteers have been appointed to more than 900 cases in the past 13 years. Mary Burkey Owens to Present "Drafting Premarital Agreements in Virginia"

Joe Owen was also named a Virginia Super Lawyer for 2009. This is the second year he has received this honor. Joe has a general practice which includes civil and criminal litigation at all trial levels.
Sam Kaufman was named a 2009 Virginia Rising Star. The Rising Star designation recognizes lawyers age 40 and under. Sam has a general practice with a focus on litigation and business matters.
