Joe Owen began practicing law in 1976 after receiving his J.D. from the University of Virginia Law School. He is an experienced and well-respected trial lawyer who has achieved large jury verdicts and settlements in civil cases and excellent results for clients in criminal cases.

Joe received a B.S. degree from the University of Richmond, where he was a scholarship football player. Joe's early athletic experience continues to impact his life. For over 35 years, he volunteered his time with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), serving as State Chairman and a member of the National Board of Trustees and on the local FCA at Armstrong High School. Joe's greatest and fondest accomplishment in sports is teaching and coaching his three sons, Elliott, Grayson and Reid, all three played football in school. Joe and his wife Lori, a retired kindergarten teacher, reside in Midlothian. Two of his sons, Elliott and Reid live in Los Angeles; Joe's middle son Grayson is deceased.

In 2013, Joe was named the recipient of the Tradition of Excellence Award by the Virginia State Bar’s General Practice Section. This award recognizes a lawyer who personifies the highest tradition of personal and professional excellence and who actively contributes to the community and heightens the image of general practice attorneys in Virginia. Joe was also honored as a 2011 "Leader in the Law" for providing leadership in the legal profession and service to the community. He has been recognized as one of Virginia's Legal Elite, selected by his peers, in Virginia Business Magazine. Joe is also currently listed in Best Lawyers in America in the Litigation: Health Care and Litigation: Insurance categories. He has achieved Martindale-Hubbell’s highest AV® Preeminent rating for legal ability and ethical standards. Since 2008, he has been selected for “Virginia Super Lawyers” in the category of general litigation after an extensive peer review and editorial research process by Thomson Reuters. Having served on the Board of Directors of the Virginia Association of Defense Attorneys and as a member and past president of the Midlothian, VA Rotary Club, Joe stays active in local and national activities.

Joe is a founding member of North Star Community, which was started to provide a Christ-centered approach to recovery where hurting people and families can receive encouragement, education and support in their recovery process.

He is currently the Chairman of the Drug Court Foundation of Chesterfield County. The Drug Court offers people with drug addictions that have been charged with a drug or larceny offense an opportunity to get intensive addiction recovery treatment and stay out of jail.

Joe is passionate about his work in addiction recovery and equally passionate about helping his clients restore and recover their lives during often difficult situations that have put them in the legal system. He, and his partners, founded Owen & Owens PLC with a different focus than many law firms; Joe is interested in people. Specifically in helping people, for Joe, "Every Client Matters" is not just a firm tagline; it's his personal mantra in practicing law.
